Singer/Songwriter Samuel Taylor discusses his track ‘Driving to Nowhere’, as featured on the Sorority end credits.
First, writer/director James Webber talks about his decision to include the track in the film’s score.
Having met Samuel through a friend, I was instantly drawn to his music and knew I’d love to work with him one day. Initially, I felt strongly that I didn’t want a track playing over the end credits of Sorority, preferring the film to end with the score. But then I heard Sam’s track ‘Driving to Nowhere’… It felt so in sync with the themes of our film, that it seems like the perfect accompaniment for, not only Derek Kirkup’s wonderful score, but the very end of the film itself. It goes to show that, even if you have a very clear idea of what you want as a creative, it’s sometimes better to keep an open mind. I was beyond thrilled that Sam came onboard and let us use his work in the film.
Samuel, how did you become involved in the film?
James is a good friend and I’ve worked with him in the past on a few projects. He asked to use a track from my debut EP for the film and of course I was happy to be able to work with him once again.
How did you feel about seeing your work as part of Sorority.
It’s great for the song to be part of the film. It is always a good feeling when songs written and recorded in years gone by find new life.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on a new album and heading into the studio in May to start recording. I’m also soon to be releasing the debut EP of a new project with Rebecca Van Cleave called ‘The Greatest Endangered Thing’.
How did the pandemic lockdown affect your work as a musician? Did it give you more time to work on new material or did it affect your creativity?
It’s definitely been a strange year for everyone, musicians included. For the first time since I was a teenager, I have gone a full year without playing a gig. That has felt very unsettling, not being able to have that expressive outlet and shared experience of live performance with an audience has definitely been missed. I have had time to finish songs for my latest album, which is positive, but I can’t wait until we are able to experience live music together again, hopefully in the not too distant future.
